USAID Water Security and Sanitation Projects: Past and Future
Between October 2025 and March 2026 Egeria Strategies interviewed former USAID staff, implementing partners, and local and regional experts to better understand the scale, scope, and impact of these programs and views on potential risks of their termination. Coupled with deep analysis of USAID program and budgeting documents and lists of programs terminated during the abrupt end of USAID and transition of international development and global health responsibilities to the U.S. Department of State, these accounts highlight the importance of water security, drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, and opportunities for the way forward.
Thank you to the anonymous donor who made this research possible, to the Millennium Water Alliance for hosting the project, and to the many people who shared information and perspectives throughout the project.
