What's in a name
Why Egeria?
It was a challenge for me to come up with a name for this business. I wanted something that reflected my values, my skills, and my dedication to supporting people to make the world a better place. Then I stumbled upon Egeria. Despite her relative obscurity, many things about her resonated deeply as a symbol for the roles I hope to play in the world.
In ancient Rome, Egeria was worshipped as a water spirit, and associated with both the Goddess Diana and the Muses. Talk about a powerhouse group of women. As a water spirit, Egeria’s grottos and springs in and around Rome were believed to confer wisdom, prophetic vision, fertility, and healing, and people regularly made offerings to her to receive help solving tough problems. Egeria and Diana were believed to share guardianship over healthy pregnancy and childbirth. And, as her reputation grew, Egeria became associated with the Muses; her gift: inspiration and foresight.
But Egeria was more than a mythical being. She was also an advisor to Roman King Numa Pompilius, who ruled from 715–672 BC. It is believed that she was his political advisor, guiding him to lead Roman society into harmony, inclusion, and democracy, and his peaceful reign is often credited to her.
A political advisor focused on justice and equity, a spirit associated with the lifegiving powers of water, a minor goddess who inspired, enwisened, and protected health. When all those pieces came together, I knew Egeria Strategies was the shingle I would hang. Welcome!
